How to Celebrate Black History Month

Happy February,

This month is not only love month but it’s BLACK History Month. It’s the one month dedicated to showering black people and their culture some love. It brings light to the sacrifices made by black people for the life that we live now. It’s also a chance to bring up the amazing things black people are doing now.

So, to celebrate this monumental month, I decided to write a couple of things you and I can do to celebrate black history month the best way possible.

Here are some ideas

  • Read Up on Your Black History - I’m not just talking about Malcolm X, Martin Luther or Rosa Parks. I’m talking about new history about all the things black people have created and done to advance their people as a whole. I would start with the following: Miseducation of the Negro, The Black Cabinet, The Three Mothers

  • Support a Black Organization - This could range from black owned businesses to charities designated to assist blacks like the following: NAACP, ACLU, Thurgood Marshall College Fund and The National Black Child Development Institute

  • Watch More Black Shows or Movies - If you would like to immerse yourself in black culture, start with black movies, tv shows or podcasts that show different ranges of blackness. Blackness is NOT just ONE thing. There are plenty of ways to be black. So, yes we might have successful drug shows like Raising Kanan or BMF, but we have other shows like the Neighborhood or Sistas that showcase blackness in different light. One is not better than the other, but it will shed light on the different ways blackness is highlighted or protrayed.

Although this is a little way to show black appreciation or support. It’s always nice to re-evaluate the way you think about blackness and how it is portrayed in daily life. How do you view black people? How do you appreciate blackness? How do you view black culture? Do you consume black culture?

All these questions can be asked and answered by all races. Your view on blackness in society impacts more black people than you know. So, educate yourself and figure out how you aid in the advancement of black people and black culture.

How are you making the world a better place for black people? Honestly, how are you making the world a better place for ALL people.

Let me know in the comments how are you celebrating black history month.
